Have you ever thought about Hollywood weddings? Not the ones that involve movie stars walking down the aisle, but the ones that Hollywood makes happen in their movies. The truth is that those weddings fascinate us as much as the real ones do. Who can forget the classic style wedding gown worn by Talia Shire, Don Corleone’s daughter, at the beginning of the Godfather movie? She was married in style, wearing a long flowing gown with a veil that was as long as her dress. But this was not the only wedding that occurred in the Godfather trilogy. Michael marries in the movie as well, although his first wedding is much simpler than the extravaganza thrown by his father for his sister. His bride’s dress is also simpler, not as flowing, with a short veil. She was a quieter person and her gown reflected her personality.
There are many other early Hollywood movie weddings that are not easy to forget. These must include the strange gown worn by Elsa Lancaster as the Bride of Frankenstein. Many people have compared this wedding costume to a sheet or some type of night time attire. It seemed to simply hang there without any style. What about the dress worn by Vivian Leigh when Scarlet married for the first time? The movie is a classic, known by millions, many of who felt the dress was overdone, unattractive and had too many things hanging from it. In comparison the dress worn by Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music is very plain. Though some felt the dress looked like what you would expect a former nun to wear, nothing too fancy, no frills or lace, others looked at her and saw a gown that was exquisite in its simplicity.
When talking about the wedding dresses from classic movies how can we forget the dress worn by Ann-Margaret when she married Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas? This 1964 movie made the then sex symbol look like the girl next door. As well, there was the dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1957s Funny Face. It was a dress that showed the style of that decade as it was shorter than gown length. This plain dress, which fell just below the knees, was simple yet elegant. It was sleeveless, had a full skirt and her short simple veil matched it perfectly.
Though there were many wedding scenes in the old classics one that needs to be included in this list is the dress worn by Vanessa Redgrave as Guinevere in the movie Camelot. This medieval ivory gown is considered by many to be an incredible reflection of the times and accurate in the type of dress that a woman in her position would wear. Others have compared it to a macramé project gone wrong. Lastly, who can forget Lena Horne in the 1943 movie Stormy Weather? The dress she wore to marry the dancer, played by actor/dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, was long, white and layered. The off the shoulder sleeves were puffy and the bodice was flattering. She wore a very pretty white hat instead of a veil.
Over the decades these incredible wedding dresses have reflected both the eras and the themes of the movies. There are hundreds of other wedding outfits that have been featured in movies, both old classics, modern and recent ones, where we have watched our favorite brides walk down the aisles and sighed at the beauty of their wedding moment.
