What is the purpose of a wedding coordinator and do you need to hire one?  The answer to this question depends on a few things. First, how big is the wedding that you are having? The bigger the affair the more details that need to be handled. There are so many choices to make. You need to decide where to hold the ceremony and where to hold the reception. There are flowers arrangements to pick and meals to choose. You need to pick the color options of the clothing of those who will be in the wedding party and match them to the tablecloths and napkins. There are seating considerations that need to be mulled over. Sometimes you can get help from a family member, a bridesmaid or other friends, with all these details. But, if there is no one who can help, or no one who you feel you would like to help you, then you might want to consider a wedding planner’s services.

The job of the wedding planner is to take care of all the details for you so that your wedding day is less stressful.  Therefore you want to find one with good references, perhaps one who helped with the wedding of someone in your family, a coworker or friend. Then let them create your magical day.  They will begin by helping you put together a budget so that you spend only what you want to. A good wedding coordinator is not tied to any one florist, hall, or wedding attire store. They are working solely for you and not looking for kickbacks from wedding services that they will recommend.  But, at the same time they will recommend wedding services that they are familiar with. These will be stores that they recommend often and so there will likely be some discounts available for you if you use them.

Based on your budget they will know which venues to suggest for the wedding. If you had your heart set on getting married in the backyard of your parent’s home they will know the right contacts to set up a large tent. They will be able to recommend caterers, and find a service to provide the chairs and tables and one that will clean everything up at the end. But if it’s a reception of a different kind you want they will find that for you as well.  Some places will be able to host the ceremony and the reception while others will require a move to the reception hall. All these things can easily be taken care of by the wedding coordinator as long as you make it clear what you want and give them enough time to plan your wedding.

Remember that you get to choose how much you want the wedding coordinator to do. You can have them do nothing more than a consultation to give you recommendations or they can handle the entire wedding so you have almost nothing to do but enjoy your day. They will charge you for this service based on how much you want them to do. If it is no more than a few conversations and recommendations they will charge you on an hourly basis. If they are running everything for you they are more likely to charge a small percentage of the overall cost of your wedding. Either way the wedding planner will work hard to make your wedding day one to remember.
