Who would have thought that there was one wedding date that would be considered so lucky that it would become the most popular wedding day in history? It surprised many wedding planners, wedding officiators and wedding venue operators with the popularity of July 7th, 2007. To superstitious Americans the triple seven had significance. Many believed that by marrying on that date there was more chance that their marriage would be a successful one. They wanted lucky number seven to keep their love strong.
Some couples did nothing more than use this wedding date as their formulae for a happy after while other couples made it the theme of their wedding day. The casino theme was one that was used a lot on that day. Color choices tended to be blacks, reds and whites than on other wedding days. More napkins were ordered in those colors, but as well there were ones with dice patterns and even ones that looked like casino chips. Couples demanded, and got, limousines with the triple seven in the license plate numbers. Some couples had the ceremony, or the reception begin at seven while others served seven course meals, had seven bridesmaids or had seven different kinds of flowers in the bridal bouquet. Other couples would only take rooms with the number seven on them or on the seventh floor for their honeymoon stays.
There were early hints that this day was going to be special. Many couples will plan their wedding date in advance. On average dates are booked six to twelve months before the date they want to be married. This helps to ensure that they will get the wedding date and time that most appeals to them. But for July 7th, 2007 couples began booking two years in advance. So obvious was the popularity of this day that one of the big department store chains held a contest where they would give away seven all expense paid for weddings if the couples would marry in their garden centers on that day. Las Vegas attracted more than its average number of couples on that day. One wedding chapel reported that unlike their usual summer wedding day of between thirty and fifty ceremonies conducted they had nearly a hundred and twenty that day and actually had to close their bookings four months in advance of that day.
In the casinos seven is a lucky number. It makes the magic twenty one in the game Black Jack, it wins on the slot machines and it is lucky in dice. But, seven means more to people than simply the fact that in Vegas it means you won. The number seven has religious significance as well. In the Catholic religion seven is the number of virtues and the number of sacraments. In the Jewish religion the bride must circle the groom seven times during an Orthodox ceremony. Then they celebrate with seven days of special meals. In the Islamic religion it represents the number of doors to Heaven. Others look at its involvement in our everyday lives. There are seven notes to the musical scale, it is the number of digits in a person’s home phone number when the area code is excluded, and there are seven days in the week. Despite all the fuss about this important date, which will never be seen again in our lifetimes, some women say they picked this date simply because it will be easy for their husband to be to remember their anniversary.
