On the most important day of your life the wedding dress you choose will be a reflection of what you want for your day. No longer is the dress simply something long and white. It is a choice. At one time women picked a white wedding gown from a small number of styles and that was what she was married in. The styles were reflected in the era they got married in not in what they really wanted. The choices were limited. This is not the case anymore.  Women can choose their dresses based on so many more things including length, color, style and vintage.

These days many more women are designing their wedding dress to reflect the era of clothing they like. They no longer feel obligated to wear the current styles but are not more likely to make the clothes worn a statement of self expression.  Brides of today do not want to look like every other woman who is getting married the same year, the same month, as they are. Style is saying more about the way they dress then tradition. There are many women who have chosen to go retro and get married in the styles of their mothers or even grandmothers while others have chosen to get married in the styles of medieval queens.

There are still many brides of today who believe in carrying on the tradition begun in 1840 by Queen Victoria. When she married Prince Albert she wore an elegant white wedding dress. This was the beginning of the tradition of wearing white because women of the time wanted to be like her. It was a fairy tale ceremony and women wanted the same. Some women still marry in the traditional while gown, but even those who do are adding a little something here or there to make it more an expression of their own style instead of simply what they find in their local wedding store.

Some women want to get married in the dress worn by their mothers. This is especially true if they see their parent’s marriage as having been a successful one. There are so many marriages today that end in divorce that a woman whose parents stayed happily married for decades may feel that wearing her mother’s wedding dress will bring her and her soon to be husband some good luck.

Depending on what style a woman is considering she may not find what she wants in a wedding store. She may instead choose to have a dressmaker make her wedding dress exactly as she wants it. She may even decide to design it herself. Another option, if the soon to be bride is looking for something different, is to look online. There are many exquisite dress styles based on gowns of the past that are offered for sale, made to measure, over the internet.

No matter what a woman chooses to wear on her wedding day she will be beautiful. It is a day she should remember with affection, happiness and warmth. Since this day is supposed to be her day, what wedding dress she wears should be her choice.
