Did you ever wonder what the purpose of a wedding gift registry was?  Some people think it is a strange tradition for a couple to register with a favorite store where they have already chosen the things they would like to receive as gifts. Some people find this practice pushy but it is those people who do not understand the real purpose behind such a registry. It is not to insult the guests or to push them into buying expensive gifts. The true purpose of a registry at a store, or two, is for those couples who are just starting out. Not all couples live together before getting married. Nor is every person about to be married living on their own.  A wedding registry will help those couples who are just starting out have the opportunity to get the things they need to set up their first home. And for those couples who do live on their own it is still their first home together that they want it to be just right.

A wedding registry is easy to use system where you are able to give gifts that you know are what the bride and groom really want. The first step is to find out which store, or stores, the couple has registered with.  They will have spent considerable time picking the items that they feel they need.  The couple will have registered as many as six months before the wedding to give their friends and family lots of time to see if there is something there that they want to give. They will have sat down and picked the pattern they want for their dinner ware, glassware and flatware. Many stores offer registries. This means you could be buying the couple anything from dishes to bed sheets to wine glasses or silver platters.

A couple may also have listed on the wedding registry small appliances that they need like blenders, juicers or electric can openers. They may even go a little bigger and have a microwave or food processor listed. Sometimes with more expensive items a few guests may decide to go in on a gift together. At other stores the couple may have towels, linens or tablecloths listed.  They may even be registered somewhere that sells luggage.

Sometimes a couple will have an item or two that is really expensive. Most likely they do not expect this gift to be bought by a single guest or at all, but just added everything they thought they would enjoy in their new life together. Never feel obligated to purchase something that is out of your budget. One big advantage for couples who use a wedding registry is that they are unlikely to wind up with duplicate gifts. There will not be four electric can openers and two blenders waiting on the gift table for them.

No one is obligated to give gifts from the registry. If you have chosen a wedding gift that is something that you want to give, then that is what you should do. The couple getting married is going to appreciate whatever you give them because they will know that you choose it with love and great consideration.
